About the project
Relevance
Diseases of nut crops cause significant damage to crops. Protecting plantings from diseases is one of the main measures aimed at increasing their productivity. Therefore, the most important issue in the cultivation of nut crops remains its liberation from bacterial and fungal pathogens. Due to the ongoing climate changes, pathogens of many diseases have become significantly more active, and epiphytotics of harmful diseases have become more frequent. In this regard, it is extremely important to identify the spectrum of fungal and bacterial pathogens of walnuts, assess the resistance of varieties to the most dangerous pathogens and develop effective methods of protection against them. Pathogen detection systems developed for the first time within the framework of this project will allow timely prevention of the spread of infection in walnut orchards.
Purpose
Identification and study of pathogens of the main walnut diseases by microbiological and molecular genetic methods, assessment of the genetic potential of resistance of varieties to the most economically important pathogens and development of recommendations for protection against diseases to improve the breeding process and increase the productivity of plantations.
Achieved results
As a result of the research, pathogens of walnut varieties and local forms have been identified. The prevalence and dynamics of the development of fungal and bacterial diseases of walnuts have been revealed. The analysis of the genetic potential of resistance of local varieties and wild genotypes to economically important pathogens is carried out. 5 isolates of Marsonia juglandis have been identified in walnut samples collected in southern Kazakhstan. The study of SNP genotyping data revealed key genetic markers contributing to the breeding of disease-resistant varieties. Based on the results of laboratory and field tests, it was found that the fungicides Skor and Strobi against alternariasis, as well as Casumin and Agri Gent Plus 800 against bacterial blotch, are effective means of protecting walnuts from diseases. Recommendations on the protection of walnuts from diseases have been developed and implemented in Manshuk Agricultural Complex and Fazenda UM LLP.

Information for potential users
The cultivation of disease-resistant walnut varieties and the use of effective means of protection against diseases will reduce the pesticide burden on the agrocenosis, which will contribute to the production of environmentally friendly products, environmental protection, and reduction of material costs for cultivation. The developed recommendations for the protection of walnuts from diseases can be successfully applied in the plantations of the southern fruit zone of Kazakhstan to improve the breeding process and increase the productivity of trees.
